A weekly guide to The Advantage

Put The Advantage to work, one Monday at a time.

Most leadership teams who read The Advantage agree with every page. Then Monday comes, the inbox fills up, and the book goes back on the shelf.

4disciplines takes you through Patrick Lencioni's four disciplines of organizational health over 13 weeks. Every Monday you get a short video from me, a passage from the book, three questions to answer honestly, and one thing to try with your team before the next Monday.

Half an hour a week is enough to keep up. The conversations it starts with your team will take longer, and they should.

The 13 weeks

The four disciplines of a healthy organization, in the order Lencioni wrote them.

Week 1 is the case for organizational health. Week 13 closes with a systems audit: your team names one system to improve and captures what it learned in its playbook.

01

Build a cohesive leadership team

Weeks 2–4

Answer honest questions about how your team works, alone or as a group, decide what to do about what you find, then work on it with tips and exercises. If your leadership team can't argue openly about the things that matter, the next nine weeks won't stick.

02

Create clarity

Weeks 5–7

Six questions your leadership team has to answer the same way, two each week.

03

Overcommunicate clarity

Weeks 8–10

Say it, then say it again. Lencioni's rule of thumb is that people don't believe a message until they've heard it about seven times.

04

Reinforce clarity

Weeks 11–13

Build the answers into simple systems for hiring, onboarding, training, feedback, performance, recognition and rewards, so clarity lasts when the leaders aren't in the room.

“The single greatest advantage any company can achieve is organizational health. Yet it is ignored by most leaders even though it is simple, free, and available to anyone who wants it.”

I'm Gordon Blocker.

Principal Table Group Consultant

I started out where most people do: on a team dealing with its own dysfunctions. About 20 years ago a friend and partner handed me The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, and I was hooked by how simple and relatable Patrick Lencioni made the work. Since 2013 I've served as a Principal Table Group Consultant, trained and credentialed directly through The Table Group, Lencioni's consulting firm, helping organizations get healthier.

I built 4disciplines for leaders who read the book, liked it, and wanted someone to take them through it at a pace that fits a real job.
